Food Intolerance Testing Using the Vega Machine
Food intolerance testing with the Vega machine is a form of electrodermal screening (EDS), a technology used in integrative and functional medicine for over 40 years to assess functional stress responses in the body.
Unlike conventional allergy tests, which measure immune-mediated IgE reactions, Vega testing focuses on non-IgE–mediated food intolerances, which are commonly responsible for delayed and chronic symptoms.
Scientific Basis
The Vega machine is based on principles of electrodermal biofeedback, originally developed from the work of Dr Reinhold Voll in Germany. It measures changes in the skin's electrical conductance at specific acupuncture points, which are known to have lower electrical resistance than surrounding tissue.
These points are functionally connected, through the autonomic nervous system, to internal organs and regulatory systems. Physiological stress — including stress triggered by problematic foods — can alter autonomic nervous system activity. This, in turn, produces measurable changes in skin conductance. The Vega system detects these changes in real time.
How the Test Works
During the assessment:
- A handheld electrode is placed in the patient's hand.
- A probe is applied to specific acupuncture points on the hands and feet.
- The Vega device sends an extremely low-voltage electrical signal through the body (far below perceptible or harmful levels).
- When a test substance (for example, wheat, dairy, or eggs) is introduced into the circuit, the machine detects whether the body's electrical response remains stable or becomes disrupted.
A stable reading indicates good tolerance.
A falling or unstable readingindicates a stress response consistent with intolerance.
This response reflects functional disturbance, not structural disease — meaning it identifies physiological stress patterns before pathology develops.
What the Test Identifies
Vega food intolerance testing is used to assess:
- Delayed food reactions
- Digestive stress responses
- Functional disturbances in gut regulation
- Autonomic nervous system reactivity to foods
It is particularly useful for patients with:
- Bloating, IBS-type symptoms
- Migraines
- Chronic fatigue
- Skin conditions
- Joint pain
- Brain fog
Where standard allergy tests are often normal.
Advantages of Vega Testing
- Non-invasive and painless
- No blood samples
- No need for food elimination prior to testing
- Immediate results in clinic
- Suitable for adults and children
It provides a functional assessment of reactivity, complementing conventional medical investigations.
Clinical Interpretation
Results are not viewed in isolation. They are interpreted alongside:
- Symptom history
- Diet patterns
- Medical background
- Nutritional status
The findings guide:
- Personalised dietary planning
- Targeted gut support
- Nutritional therapy programmes
This integrative approach improves accuracy and clinical relevance.
Important Medical Context
Vega testing does not diagnose allergy or disease and does not replace conventional medical testing. It is a functional assessment tool used within complementary and integrative healthcare to identify stress patterns that may contribute to symptoms.
Common Symptoms of Food Sensitivities
If you experience any of these symptoms regularly, food sensitivity testing may help identify the underlying cause:
Digestive Issues
- Bloating
- Gas
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Stomach pain
- Nausea
Skin Problems
- Eczema
- Rashes
- Hives
- Acne
- Dry skin
- Itching
Other Symptoms
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Brain fog
- Joint pain
- Mood changes
- Sleep issues
